Kharad weaving is practised by one of the tribes of the Kutch region.
Like the other crafts practised in Kutch, Kharad weaving also was an important part of the social fabric of the society.
The Kharad (meaning a carpet) was created in close relationship with the pastoralist community in the region. The wool obtained from the goat, sheep and camel was the core raw material for creating the Kharad creations. The hand spinners worked their magic and made wool out of these.
Passed on from one generation to another, this craft has seen a decline since the entire value chain has been disrupted and the local linkages broken.
The camel wool is getting rarer by the day. The craft itself is now practised by a few families in the Kutch region.
We at TerraPortier are celebrating the craft and the artisans who are carrying on the legacy of the craft.
These artisans craft these magical rugs on their nomadic looms and weave with the front of the rug facing down (that is quite amazing don’t you think?)
We have partnered with one of the young artisans who is ready to share this craft with the world.
Each of the designs were created with the artisan as a fresh new take on the craft while respecting its traditions.
All the rugs presented are made from the natural sheep and camel wool and the wool has been dyed in natural colours prepared by the artisan.
This treasure will uplift you for decades to come!
